Common Questions and Answers
12/29/92
Question: I'm trying to install CatchWord on my computer and it just keeps
returning to the DOS prompt. What's wrong?
Answer: This is an installation quirk which has been seen on some models
of XT computer. Contact our Sales Information Services department at
(800) 231-7717 and request an upgrade to the latest version of CatchWord,
which alleviates this problem.
Question: I don't seem to be getting very good recognition. What can I do?
Answer: Consult FAXBACK Document #2200, titled "CATCHWORD HINTS AND TIPS"
Question: I have a lot of memory on my system, but when I start CatchWord,
it says I don't have enough to run the program. Why?
Answer: CatchWord requires 450k of free Conventional Memory. TSR (Terminate
and Stay Resident) programs and device drivers which take up the lower 640k
memory can prevent CatchWord from running. If you have free extended memory
and DOS 5.0, try loading as many TSRs as possible into high memory. Consult
your DOS 5.0 manual for use of the DEVICEHIGH and LOADHIGH commands.
Question: During RECOGNITION, I receive a MEMORY ALLOCATION ERROR or
CATCHWORD ERROR 108. What do these mean?
Answer: Memory has become overloaded because of poor recognition rate. If
the original document quality is low and generates too large an amount of
Models, the sudden memory overload generates this message. Use a cleaner
original and/or try improving recognition through the steps outlined in
FAXBACK document #2200. Be sure to reboot your system after this error
message appears. After rebooting, type:
CHKDSK /F
to find and clear any lost allocation clusters.
Question: I keep getting CATCHWORD ERROR 134. What does it mean?
Answer: If you have CatchWord version 1.20 or lower, CatchWord Error 134 is
generated when the file UFONT.IMA becomes too large or corrupted on specific
systems. Simply delete this file by going to the CatchWord directory and
typing:
DEL UFONT.IMA
Deleting this file after each CatchWord session will end the 134 error. We
have now developed a later version of CatchWord which does not generate this
error message. To obtain an upgrade, contact our Sales Information Services
department at (800) 231-7717 and ask for an upgrade to the latest version.
If you have version 1.22, this error may be caused by:
1. Scanning in dither mode. Make sure the scanner is set on line-art or
black and white mode.
2. Scanning large amounts of text at 300 or 400 dpi. Try scanning smaller
amounts of text or scanning at a lower resolution.
Question: I scan some text, the program goes through the RECOGNITION screen,
then takes me back to the main screen without going to the editor. What
happened?
Answer: CatchWord is not recognizing even a single character. This is
caused most often by light contrast settings or scanning with the scanner
in grayscale or dithered mode.
Question: When trying to scan, I get "Run-time Error R6000 Stack Overflow."
Why?
Answer: This message appears when you are attempting to scan without the
scanner initialized properly. Follow the Scanner Standard Diagnostics
outlined in FAXBACK document #2000 to help you install the scanner
successfully before attempting to scan in CatchWord.
Question: Can I install CatchWord to a network drive?
Answer: No. Even if CatchWord accepts the target drive and directory, the
program files will not appear in the target directory.
Question: Can I use a math coprocessor with CatchWord to make it faster?
Answer: CatchWord does not utilize all the capabilities of a numeric
coprocessor. Since the software does not require a coprocessor, it may run
faster but its performance will only improve by a small percentage.
Question: I scanned down the text properly, but on the SCAN screen some
text on the right hand side is missing or cut off. What's wrong?
Answer: CatchWord and your scanner were set to different resolutions. If
you have the ScanMan Plus or earlier version of the scanner, you will see a
RESOLUTION option under the OPTIONS menu in CatchWord. Make sure this
setting matches the hardware resolution switch on the scanner. If you have
a later version of the Scanner, such as a ScanMan 32 or 256, the RESOLUTION
option will not appear. The software will automatically detect the
resolution.
